Boat Repairs Past Projects: Caroline D
The Caroline D was built by Bion Farnsworth in the 1930s, just down the road from where Elk Spar & Boat Shop is now, for an MDI summer family. After several years, the owner decided to sail the boat to Bermuda, so Farmsworth put another layer of cedar over the entire boat--paint and all. By 2006 the boat was in sad shape and the storage yard it had been in for years refused to handle it anymore.
We dropped the long lead keel, and replaced the wood keel, floor timbers, half of the stem, the stern knee and deadwood, and sister framed her from the water line down; replacing the double planking. A new rudder was also needed. The Caroline is still in the family and they are contimplating sailing her down to Cuba.
